KanjiKaku for iOS
Privacy policy
Updated 2026-09-13
Who is responsible
Ricardo Uemura is responsible for KanjiKaku for iOS. For privacy requests, questions or support, contact uemurinhawork@gmail.com. This policy covers the native app; it does not cover earlier versions or other apps.
Progress on your device
Lessons, reviews, writing attempts, collections, goals and preferences are stored on your device to provide study features and track progress. The app does not require a separate KanjiKaku account and does not send this history to its own backend. You can export, import and erase progress in the app’s Settings. Files you export remain under your control and may contain this history.
Optional iCloud
When you enable sync in the app’s Settings, a progress backup is sent through CloudKit to the private database associated with your iCloud account, to sync your devices. This feature depends on Apple, your account and iCloud permissions. Turning sync off stops new syncs but does not by itself erase the existing backup. “Delete iCloud backup” disables sync on this device and requests removal of the app’s backup; local progress is kept. Deletion must complete successfully and may require another attempt if the connection fails. Other devices with sync enabled may upload local copies again; disable sync on them if you want to prevent this.
Purchases and subscriptions
The App Store processes purchases and payments. StoreKit provides the app with signed transactions and subscription status to verify access, including during an eligible free trial. The app does not receive your card number or Apple account credentials. Study content requires valid access: the seven-day trial is subject to Apple’s eligibility rules, followed by a paid, automatically renewing subscription. Manage or cancel your subscription in Apple’s subscription settings. Erasing data or uninstalling the app does not cancel a subscription.
Widgets and reminders
Widgets read a local study summary, such as the daily kanji, goal, streak and reviews, shared with the app extension on the device. The summary may be visible on the screen where you add a widget. Reminders are optional local notifications that require your permission. The app does not use its own remote notification service. You can turn reminders off in the app’s Settings or iOS Settings and remove widgets at any time.
Audio and writing
Stroke recognition runs on the device. The app does not record your voice or request microphone access. Read-aloud uses iOS speech synthesis, subject to available voices and Apple service settings. Feedback sounds can be turned off in the app’s Settings.
Advertising, tracking and diagnostics
KanjiKaku contains no ads, tracking SDKs or third-party analytics and does not sell personal data. Apple may process technical, purchase and diagnostic information according to its services and your device’s analytics-sharing choices. The app does not send study history to its own analytics tools.
Contacting support
If you email support, support receives your address, message and any attachments you choose to share. This information is used to respond and resolve the request and is retained as needed for support or to meet applicable obligations. Avoid sending sensitive data, payment details or a full backup unless necessary. Email is handled by the corresponding mail provider.
Control, retention and deletion
Local progress remains until you erase it or remove the app’s data. “Erase progress” in Settings resets local history while keeping preferences and, if iCloud is enabled, the reset is also synced. Technical markers with identifiers and dates may be retained to prevent old data from reappearing during sync, without retaining names or contents of deleted collections. To delete the cloud copy, use “Delete iCloud backup” and confirm that it completed. Exported backups, copies on other devices, system backups and purchase information must be managed separately. To request access to, correction of or deletion of data you sent to support, email uemurinhawork@gmail.com. Your rights depend on applicable law; data may be preserved where required by law.
External services and links
Optional iCloud sync, purchases, speech synthesis and system services are provided by Apple and are also subject to Apple’s policies. Opening links to data sources, licenses or support takes you to external services with their own policies. KanjiKaku does not send your study progress when opening these links.
Policy updates
This policy may be updated to reflect changes to the app or applicable obligations. The update date identifies the available version. Material changes will be communicated in the app or on the public policy page.
